New «SharePoint Online» service available
Microsoft SharePoint Online (SPO) has been technically ready since 2021. SharePoint Online is now also defined and available as a complete service (including SLA).
What does this mean?
SPO sites can now be created independently via the SPO main page https://ethz.sharepoint.com/SitePages/en/Home.aspx. There are also corresponding instructions and links to a variety of training courses on SPO (e.g. Microsoft Learning Path, L3Hub, LinkedIn Learnings).
Important to note: SharePoint Online is a shared external cloud service. Documents with the classification «strictly confidential» may not be stored there.
SharePoint On-Premise is approaching the end of its lifecycle
Support for SharePoint On-Premise will be discontinued in the second quarter of 2026 due to Microsoft product evolution. New SharePoint sites are now to be realised on SPO. The IT Shop of ETH Zurich’s IT Services has already switched its SharePoint offering from «on-premise» to «online».
The SharePoint On-Premise environment (with around 450 ETH sites) must be «emptied» by March 2026. This is the responsibility of the site owner and content owner. There are various options for proceeding (e.g. deletion, archiving, migration/new creation on SPO). The SPO project team is working on the development of an «Enabling Concept». The objective of this concept is to enable and support site owners and content owners for this work, and to use the functionalities of SPO in the best possible and most efficient way.
Further information on training opportunities and the «Enabling Concept» will follow.
