ITS Computers in use in Dakar-Senegal
Forty computers donated by ITS to set up an IT classroom in Dakar, Senegal.
At the end of 2019, Academic Services received a request from the Association Amis de Timbereng Genève as to whether the ETH could provide used computers for a computer science classroom that was being set up at a school in Dakar, Senegal. The request was passed on by Academic Services to IT Services. Once the necessary clarifications and references were obtained, this donation was approved by the Director of IT Services, Dr. Rui Brandao. A total of 40 decommissioned HP 800 G1 DM computers could therefore be provided as a donation by the ZO-Support group. The collection took place in January 2020 by Mr. Assane Diop, who is responsible for the project in Africa. The computers were prepared by the Association Amis de Timbereng and transported by ship to Dakar so that the new computer science classroom can be set up there.
We are very pleased that our old IT equipment can continue to be put to good use in this way. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Academic Services for their support with the mediation and translation.
The donated equipment is hardware that has reached its «end of life» at ETH and has been replaced with new equipment. They can of course still be used for other purposes for several years, which is why they are not disposed of but reused whenever possible.
Use in the Classroom
The pictures show the devices in use in the classroom as well as the start of the first «Computer Science Lessons». According to Assane Diop, the children are thrilled to have received this opportunity from Switzerland and are looking forward to the lessons.
Congratulations from our Director
«I am very pleased that we were able to help here. Thanks to Gianni Antonitti and colleagues for taking the initiative.»
