«Praxis D-MAVT» web application
«Praxis D-MAVT» was put into production by ITS Software Services at the end of May 2018.
Students of the D-MAVT department must complete 25-days of workshop practice in the bachelor’s programme and 60-days of industry practice in the master’s programme.
Optimised process
To ensure efficient management of administrative processes when dealing with compulsory practice, IT Services have come up with a web-based solution called «Praxis» together with D-MAVT’s Student Secretariat and Trainee Service. Among other things, the application allows company catalogues to be provided and maintained; these can be viewed by students to help them find suitable places to practice on their own or directly have themselves placed in their chosen company with the aid of the supported placement process. This option is also available to external prospective students, for example, Matura (Swiss school leaving examination) graduates who wish to complete their compulsory practice for the bachelor’s degree before starting their studies at ETH. To this end, prospective students can register themselves; this can then be activated in the application by the Trainee Service.
Workflows
Students upload information regarding their completed practice directly via the application. This means that required documents such as employment contracts, traineeship confirmations or progress reports can be collected in the application. A configurable approval process assists the Student Secretariat with confirmation of the reported practice. The students› tutors and study administrators can also get involved in this process. Communication regarding the individual approval steps can be viewed in the application at any time in a status log. Following confirmation of the practice work, the awarded credit points are automatically reported by the system to the training application for inclusion in the performance report.
Useful for other departments
The application is based on the technologies of the teaching applications. The redundantly designed database and the application server ensure high availability. It has a multi-client architecture, meaning that the system can be made available to other departments of ETH should they be interested. The reusable solution concept is completed by the ability to configure any type of practice, as well as a number of other parameters, such as definition of the document types to be uploaded.
