Mobile Development at ITS SWS

Ongoing expansion of the EduApp

Now that ETH Zurich has decided to handle the development and support of mobile apps internally, IT Services are implementing the next major expansion of the EduApp in-house.

The development of the EduApp started in the summer of 2015, and the roll-out has been ongoing within ETH since mid-2016. Within the scope of the development work, ITS Software Services (ITS SWS) has created various reusable components, which ITS SWS can thus utilise in future for other ETH apps.

Components

The first large component is the «Campus Map». The first version helps users to find buildings and rooms and provides floor plans on a map. It already enables navigation and can display student workspaces. ITS SWS developed the components in such a way that other «Points of Interest» like catering facilities, printers, parking spaces, etc. can be activated.

Further collaboration

The medium- to long-term objective is to establish an app factory within ITS SWS, which will develop and maintain apps using modern software engineering methods. Other ETH areas are also starting to show an interest in the app development activities of IT Services. For example, ITS SWS are going to start another project at the beginning of 2017 together with the services department. ITS is currently holding talks with the Safety, Security, Health and Environment department (SSHE) regarding an app for security services.
