Old instead of brand new?
Timely optimized substitute of notebooks discussed in environmental points of view.
Studies of the German federal office for environment verifies: The energy used for the production of a notebook is by far higher than the energy it makes use of while being on-stream.
Not even the increased energy efficiency of a new gadget justifies a new acquisition. When investigating all of the greenhouse gas emissions a notebook produces, it’s to be noticed that 56% of it are arisen during production and only 36% when actually being on stream.
Think about the environment
This is the reason why it’s suggested to lengthen the time of usage of a notebook or a mobile phone as long as possible. The longer it’s used, the better for the environment!
In a concrete way this means to only change to an energy efficient gadget when:
- The notebook is technically defect and isn’t repairable
- The notebook doesn’t correspond anymore to its functional claims
When buying a new notebook you should check following criteria:
- Possibilities of upgrades
- Modular assembling
- Availability of replacement parts
- Long-term usage of the software
If all of the criteria is fulfilled, it’s ensured that environmental aspects are taken into consideration and the time of use is to be lengthened. The aspects of a fair production isn’t mentioned in the studies and should be discussed separately. It’s highly recommended to research the conditions of production before buying a gadget.
It’s also possible to give your old gadget to a friend or family member who can use it second hand.
In the mean time some producers have started to offer leasing programs, which provide a new gadget frequently. The old gadget is returned and still marketed. http://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program (currently only available in the USA).
