New Print Service at ETH Zurich
ETH Zurich aspires to establish an ecologically exemplary institution in the coming years guided by social and environmental principles based on RUMBA, a project launched by the federal government.
With the implementation of RUMBA (Resource and Environmental Management by the Federal Administration), ETH Zurich commits to continual improvement of environmental performance. This means reducing the proportionate consumption of natural resources and minimizing the direct and indirect impact of its activities on the environment.
However, it is unlikely that the paperless office, much less paperless research, will take over in the near future. The ITS project Print Service is an important step towards environmental protection. Its new device fleet affords the ETH significant savings, resulting from consolidation and user-oriented processing.
From project team consisting of ITS members and ETH colleagues to WTO tender and rollout
The first 12 units were delivered and put into operation in a pilot rollout in March 2014. Additional 20 multifunction devices (MFP) and printers followed in April and May 2014. After this selective pilot rollout, the Department of Mathematics followed suit in mid-June 2014 and replaced their entire fleet of 72 printers and MFPs with 27 new Nashuatec devices. Barely two weeks later, the new building, LEE, was ready for occupation and equipped with 13 Nashuatec units. Delivery of the 100th unit in August 2014 took place at an unusual location: the ETH Zurich experimental farm Früebüel, located at an altitude of about 1000 meters on the Walchwiler Berg above Lake Zug. Meanwhile, the Department of Physics has also decided to join the new ITS print service and to replace their currently more than 150 printers by an estimated 50-70 MFPs and printers; 20 of which have already been delivered. The goal is to install 200 new devices annually and thus replace 800 units in 4 years (practically all old printers and MFDs in the ZO (Central Bodies) and the departments).
Print fleet
One important specification defined was that the print server should run under Windows. PaperCut was selected as the most appropriate billing software for a university product. The new devices support secure printing, pull printing as well as copy count detection. In addition, all MFDs are equipped with a card reader for the ETH card.
