IPv6 soon to become a necessity
The specter of IPv4 address exhaustion is slowly becoming reality.
Some parts of the world, such as Asia have already exhausted their IPv4 allocations. By mid-2013, or according to some, by the end of 2012 Europe (RIPE) too will be facing address depletion.
The past 2 years has seen a tremendous increase (approx. 50%) of wireless network devices (Wi-Fi) at ETH Zurich. This means that every year 2,000 to 4,000 additional IPv4 addresses are needed. At this rate, by the spring of 2013, ETH Zurich will have no more available IPv4 addresses.
