Kaum hatte ich das neue iPad 2 in den Händen, erlebte es gleich seine Feuertaufe: Bei einer ersten Schulung zum Thema “iPad für Studium und Arbeit” an der ETH-Bibliothek konnte ich das iPad 2 einsetzen und die neue Funktion “Bildschirmsynchronisation” nutzen. Beim iPad 1 konnte nur das Videosignal (Filme, Präsentationen, Diashows) auf einen externen Bildschirm oder Beamer übertragen werden. Vom iPad 2 lassen sich nun alle Inhalte des Bildschirms über einen VGA- oder einen HDMI-Adapter auf externe Screens übertragen. Für den Einsatz im Unterricht genügt die Auflösung des VGA-Ausgangs völlig und man findet in der Regel in den Hörsälen die entsprechende Infrastruktur. Die HDMI-Variante ist dafür eher für den Heimeinsatz am HD-Fernseher geeignet.

Tatsächlich ist für mich diese Funktion der entscheidende Vorteil des neuen gegenüber dem alten iPad-Modell. Und sonst? Da wären die beiden Kameras, die sich für Video-Chat eignen. Aber ich muss gestehen, dass ich FaceTime auch bei meinem iPhone bisher nur zum Testen eingesetzt habe. Das dürfte sich auch mit dem iPad nicht ändern. Die Kamera werde ich vermutlich am ehesten für Video-Anrufe auf Skype verwenden.
Sonst bietet das iPad 2 genau dieselben Funktionen wie das iPad erster Generation. Es ist – wie Apple selbst schon das eine oder andere Mal erwähnt hat – leichter (613 gegenüber 730 Gramm), dünner (8.8 gegenüber 13.4 mm) und schneller als das Vorgängermodell. Die höhere Geschwindigkeit ist beim Aufstarten der Apps und bei Ladevorgängen von neuen Seiten gut spürbar. Ich habe aber noch keine rechenintensiven Apps ausprobiert. Bei Games, bei Musik- oder Videoapps dürfte sich die höhere Leistung des Prozessors und der Grafikkarte auszahlen.
Gespannt war ich, wie schnell sich das iPad 2 auf der Grundlage der für ein iPad 1 installierten Anwendungen installieren lässt. Auch wenn mein Setting etwas kompliziert ist (mehrere Geräte, mehrere PCs) war das iPad 2 innert weniger Minuten einsatzbereit. Als nicht nur cool im Aussehen, sondern durchaus nützlich im Einsatz erwies sich das Smart Cover – wobei die helle Oberfläche, die ich gewählt habe, schon fast nach einer Schutzhülle für die Schutzhülle ruft…
Fazit: das iPad 2 bietet einige Verbesserungen, ist schneller und handlicher als das Vorgängermodell. Ein Umstieg lohnt sich aber nur, wer die Kamerafunktion oder die Bildschirmsynchronisation braucht.

Ich gehe doch recht in der Annahme, dass Du den “Apple Digital AV Adapter” http://www.apple.com/de/ipad/features/mirroring.html genutzt hast? Mir ist nur nicht ganz klar, wie da einen Beamer angschlossen bekomme, da brauchts doch noch ein weiteres Kabel?
Nein, ich habe den Apple VGA Adapter verwendet, den ich schon fürs alte iPad gekauft hatte. Damit kann ich das iPad problemlos an die üblichen Beamer-Kabel in Hörsälen anschliessen. Der Digital AV Adapter ist wohl eher für den Heimgebrauch, wenn man das iPad an den HD-Fernseher anschliessen will. Aber für den Beamer im Hörsaal reicht die VGA-Qualität.
