eBooks und eBooks-Formate
Wer stolzer Besitzer eines eReaders ist, wird früher oder später vor die Frage gestellt, wie seine Texte ideal auf das Gerät gelangen. Ich spreche vorsichtshalber nur von eigenen Texten, denn man könnte ja auch auf die höchst verwerfliche Idee kommen, Dokumente von andern unterwegs lesen zu wollen. Aber diesen Gedanken schieben wir schnell zur Seite. Meine Anleitung darf also auf keinen Fall für die Umwandlung von lizenzpflichtigen eBooks verwendet werden…
1. eBooks-Formate
Wer schon die Formatkriege bei den Videokassetten, den Floppy-Disks, den CDs, den DVDs und anderen miterlebt hat, wundert sich nicht darüber, dass auch bei den eBooks-Formaten (mindestens) zwei Welten aufeinanderprallen: Hier der Platzhirsch unter den eBooks-Anbietern Amazon mit dem Format Mobipocket für seine Kindles (und die iRex-Familie), dort der Rest mit dem Format EPUB. Mittlerweile sind meiner Ansicht nach die Würfel gefallen, und es spricht eigentlich nichts mehr dagegen, dass sich der offene Standard EPUB durchsetzen wird.
Das Format EPUB
EPUB wird von den meisten gängigen Readern (ausser Kindle und iRex) unterstützt. EPUB eignet sich für die Anwendung auf den mobilen Lesegeräten, da es den Text an die Bildschirmgrösse anpasst. Sowohl Satzspiegel wie Seitenumbruch sind fliessend, und die Schriftgrösse kann individuell angepasst werden. Im Gegensatz zum PDF also, das sich durch einen festen Schriftsatz auszeichnet aber dadurch auf kleinen Bildschirmen schlecht lesbar ist.
Der EPUB-Standard wurde 2007 vom International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) entwickelt und basiert auf dem freien Standard XML. Es ist eine Zusammenfassung der drei offenen Standards der Open Publication Structure (OPS) für die Formatierung des Inhalts, dem Open Packaging Format (OPF) für die Beschreibung der Struktur der .epub-Dateien in XML und dem OEBPS Container Format (OCF), welches die Dateien zusammenfasst als Zip-Datei.
EPUB kennt verschiedene Formatierungen (Header, Paragraph) und kann somit wie eine Webseite Überschriften in unterschiedlicher Hierarchie erkennen und darstellen. Die Möglichkeiten Text zu formatieren entsprechen mehr oder weniger denen einer Webseite. Wenn man sich ein EPUB-Dokument im Quelltext ansieht, erkennt man die XML-Grundlage und die Ähnlichkeit mit Webpages.

Die Texte können mit Stylesheets gestaltet werden, wobei angesichts der Verwendung mit unterschiedlichen eReadern hier vermutlich eher Zurückhaltung zu empfehlen ist.
Für wissenschaftliche Texte ist zu beachten, dass Fussnoten beim EPUB-Format sinnlos sind, da Zeilenumbrüche wegfallen. In Frage kommen also nur Endnoten, wobei die Verbindung von Endnotenzeichen mit Endnotentext über Hyperlinks möglich ist. Für den Einsatz in naturwissenschaftlichen Publikationen ist ein Nachteil, dass Formeln nur entweder als Text oder als Grafik dargestellt werden können. Ich vermute aber, dass es möglich ist, aus Latex die Formeln in ein HTML-taugliches Format zu exportieren, z.B. mit LaTeX2HTML. Wenn hier jemand Erfahrungen hat, wäre ich für ein Feedback dankbar.
Best Practices für eBooks
Aus der Nutzung verschiedener eBooks im EPUB-Format möchte ich einige Grundsätze für “gute eBooks” ableiten. Ein gutes eBook zeichnet sich aus durch:
- zurückhaltende Formatierungen (denn die werden individuell vorgenommen)
- eine sinnvolle Struktur mit Überschriften, die als Header erkannt werden
- ein aus dieser Struktur generiertes Inhaltsverzeichnis
- Endnoten, die mit dem Endnotenzeichen verlinkt sind
- saubere Zeilenumbrüche (keine hart-codierten Zeilenumbrüche und Trennungen)
- angepasste Grafiken (angepasste oder skalierbare Grösse, darstellbar auch in Graustufen)
- angepasste oder in Text umgewandelte Tabellen
- Verzicht auf DRM
- ein übersichtliches Titelblatt
